A message from the 2011 Chair of the East Tennessee Section of the American Chemical Society
Welcome to the official web site for the East Tennessee Section of the American Chemical Society (ETS‐ ACS). It is my pleasure to preside over what is sure to be an exciting series of events for the local section during the 2011 calendar year. Meetings in 2011 will feature a number of speakers with presentations on varied topics of interest, including the chemistry of beer and explosives! Our spring 2011 program commences on February 16th with a presentation by Dr. Bob Bates from the University of Florida on the “Chemistry and Alchemy of Brewing”. On March 24th, we will feature a fellow ETS‐ACS member, Dr. Bernhard Wunderlich, who will provide a retrospective on his own career, which has included research efforts at both Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK). Finally, on May 5th, the spring session concludes with our annual awards ceremony, which will feature Dr. Phil Britt, Director of the ORNL Chemical Sciences Division and 2011 The Fall ETS‐ACS schedule begins on September 20th with a presentation by Dr. Mike Shepard, an expert on explosives from the Department of Homeland Security. The next meeting will be our annual S.C. Lind Lectures series which features many of the most high‐profile scientific researchers. The 2011 S.C Lind Lecturer will be Dr. Malcolm Chisholm, a prominent inorganic chemist from Ohio State University. Dr. Chisholm will present his research at two locations, UTK (October 6th) and ORNL (October 7th). On October 18th, our own Dr. Al Hazari will conduct his annual Chemistry Magic Show during National Chemistry Week, which is sure to pack the house as always. Our final meeting of the year, which is currently being scheduled, will feature Dr. Bobby Sumpter, a computational chemist from ORNL. As you can see, we have a packed and exciting schedule of events for 2011 and I am looking forward to seeing you at this year’s meetings. Sincerely, Michael Best |
